Profile
Leslie Cheung was born in Hong Kong in 1956. A celebrated singer and actor, he was also an artist who, during the 1980s and 1990s—a time far less accepting of LGBTQ+ people—bravely defied social convention and pushed beyond rigid binary gender norms through his art and public presence.
In the 1993 classic Farewell My Concubine, he portrayed the character Cheng Dieyi, embodying a delicate, emotionally intricate persona that challenged conventional masculinity. Later, in Happy Together (1997), he played a gay character set against the social climate of the time, depicting the intimate dynamics between same-sex partners and the complexities of cultural identity.
On April 1, 2003, as his depression continued to worsen, Leslie Cheung ended his life. His partner, Daffy Tong, accompanied him through his final journey as his closest loved one and inherited his estate in the capacity of a surviving partner.
